Who we are
This policy explains how Kovert Watch ("we", "us") handles personal data. It covers the Kovert Watch mobile apps for iPhone and Android, the website at getkovert.com, and our servers.
What we collect
| Data | Why we need it | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle identifier (VIN) and vehicle name | To connect your car to your account and send alerts to the right person. | Tesla, after you approve access |
| Sentry Mode events: event type and timestamp | To send you alerts and show your activity feed. | Your car, through Tesla's Fleet Telemetry service |
| The car's most recent location, and your "home" spot if you set one | We keep one latest point per car so the "Mute at home" feature can tell whether the car is parked at home, and one home point per person if you set it. We do not keep a trail of past positions. Setting a new home replaces the old one, and removing your home or deleting your account removes it. | Your car, through Tesla's Fleet Telemetry service, and you |
| Door, window, lock and movement changes while Sentry Mode is on, and a record of the deterrents the car used | To mark an alert as major, show it in your activity feed and, if you turn it on, notify you. | Your car, through Tesla's Fleet Telemetry service |
| The car's latest status: locked or unlocked, which doors and windows are open, the gear (such as Park) and the Sentry Mode state | For the parked-car check and the left-open reminder. We keep one latest value per car and overwrite it. We do not keep a history of it. | Your car, through Tesla's Fleet Telemetry service |
| Battery level, inside and outside temperature, and odometer | For the full-status screen. We read them from your car only when you open that screen, and keep just the latest reading per car. | Your car, through Tesla's Fleet API |
| Approximate location of the car at the time of an event | To show roughly where an event happened. We store a coarse location, not a continuous track. | Your car, through Tesla's Fleet Telemetry service |
| Tesla access and refresh tokens | So alerts keep working without you signing in again. Stored encrypted. | Tesla, after you approve access |
| Push notification address for your phone | To deliver alerts through Apple or Google. | Your phone |
| Your phone's language (English or Spanish) | To send notifications in your language. | Your phone |
| Subscription status | To know whether your subscription is active. | Apple App Store or Google Play, through our subscription provider |
| Who you share a car with, and the invite codes you create | To send family the alerts you chose to share. Invite codes expire, and sharing ends when you or they remove it. | You |
| Your settings (alert preferences, schedules, deterrent choice) | To work the way you configured. | You |
| Email address and message, if you write to us | To reply and give support. | You |
| Basic technical logs, such as timestamps and error codes | To keep the service running and fix problems. | Our servers |
We request only the Tesla permissions we need: vehicle information, vehicle location and vehicle commands. Vehicle commands are used to set up the data connection with your car and, only if you turn the feature on, to flash the lights, honk the horn, play the Boombox sound, or turn Sentry Mode on and off on a schedule. A sleeping car may be woken to receive a command, or when you tap Wake and refresh.
What we never collect
- Video, audio or camera footage. Sentry clips stay on the USB drive in your car. The optional local clip viewer reads them on your phone only.
- Your Tesla account password. We also do not receive your name or email from Tesla, because we do not request those permissions.
- Continuous location history or live tracking of your car.
- Your contacts, photos or other data on your phone.
- Advertising identifiers. The app and this website contain no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting tools.
How we use it
- To detect events from your car and send you alerts.
- To show your activity feed and run the features you turn on.
- To manage your subscription and provide support.
- To secure the service, prevent abuse and fix bugs.
- To meet legal obligations.
We do not use your data to train advertising models, to build profiles for sale, or to make decisions that have legal effects on you.
Who we share it with
We do not sell or rent your personal data. We share it only with service providers who help us run Kovert Watch, and only as needed:
| Provider | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Tesla, Inc. | Source of your vehicle data. We access it only with your approval. Tesla's own privacy notice applies to data it holds. |
| Hetzner Online GmbH | Server hosting. |
| Cloudflare, Inc. | Domain name system, website delivery and email routing. |
| Apple (APNs) and Google (FCM) | Delivering push notifications to your phone. |
| RevenueCat, Inc. | Managing subscriptions and entitlements. |
| Apple App Store and Google Play | Billing. We do not receive your payment card details. |
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect people or our rights, or as part of a business transfer, in which case we will tell you and this policy will continue to apply to your data.
How long we keep it
- Event history: 30 days, then deleted automatically.
- Account and Tesla tokens: until you delete your account, remove access, or your tokens expire.
- When you delete your data: we remove your account data from our live systems immediately when you delete your account in the app. Backups roll off within 14 days.
- Support emails: until your question is resolved, or until you ask us to delete them, whichever is first.
Security
Data travels over encrypted connections. Tesla tokens are encrypted at rest. Access to our servers is limited to authorized people and uses key-based authentication. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. See our Security page for more. To report a vulnerability, email [email protected].
Your choices and rights
- Delete your data in the app, or by following these steps.
- Stop access by removing the virtual key from your car, or by revoking Kovert Watch in your Tesla account's third-party settings.
- Turn off alerts and features in the app or in your phone's notification settings.
- Ask for a copy, a correction, or to restrict or object to processing by emailing [email protected].
Depending on where you live, such as California, other US states, the UK or the European Economic Area, you may have additional rights, including the right to know, access, correct and delete your personal data, to object to or limit certain processing, and to complain to your local data protection authority. We will not discriminate against you for using these rights. We do not sell or share personal data for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Children
Kovert Watch is for vehicle owners and is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in some regions). We do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has given us data, contact us and we will delete it.
Where data is stored
Our servers are currently located in Germany. If you use Kovert Watch from another country, your data is transferred to and processed in that region. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for international transfers.
Changes
We may update this policy as the app changes. We will change the date at the top and, for material changes, notify you in the app or by email before they take effect.
